Newport, TN - Lee Currens is one of the sport’s premier breeders and handlers of winning Treeing Walker coonhounds. Lee’s breeding philosophy centers upon the dual-purpose hound and his list of successes in both the nite hunts and bench shows bear that out. Lee’s experience includes being a former AKC Field Rep, the manager of the annual Grand American Bench Show, and worked closely with me in establishing and executing the successful PKC bench show program including the PKC World Coonhound Bench Show Championships in Aurora, Kentucky. Lee will join Dr. David Birdsall as they judge the upcoming Autumn Oaks Bench Show in Richmond, Indiana in September.
Lee will conduct the Bench Show Seminar at the upcoming AKC Youth World Championship in Newport, Tenn., on July 3rd. This will be an exceptional opportunity for youth handlers and adults as well to learn from one of sport’s most prominent and experienced handlers and judges. In the business world a seminar of this caliber would command a significant ticket charge. Mr. Currens seminar is absolutely free to all who desire to attend.
About Lee Currens and his hounds:
Lee Currens is retired having been employed as an engineer with Michelin, Inc. He and his wife Shirley operate a florist business in Piedmont, South Carolina, near Greenville. Lee grew up in Kentucky where he was a standout high school basketball player. He hunted the famed Kentucky River bottoms near Harrodsburg for many years before moving to South Carolina. He and Shirley have four sons.
One of Lee’s hounds, Dual Grand Champion Kentucky River Rowdy has the distinction of being the only coonhound to win World Champion titles in both Nite Hunts and Bench Shows. Rowdy won the NKC World Hunt Championship and the AKC World Bench Show CChampionship.
Two of Lee’s hounds, a father and son team consisting of Dual Grand Champion Kentucky River Boomer and Boomer’s sire Dual Grand Kentucky River Rowdy won the Dual Champion class six straight times at Autumn Oaks . Rowdy won it 4 straight years and Boomer won it two years before being retired. Kentucky River Rowdy also placed 2nd at the Annual Lee Crawford hunt at Treeing Walker Days.
Dual Grand Champion Kentucky River Boomer’s wins also included National Grand Champion at Autumn Oaks and Best Male of Show at Southeastern Treeing Walker Days as puppy. The next year at the Southeastern show he won the Champion show and then the Grand Champion show the year after that! And to emphasize the Dual Champion angle, Boomer was the Nite Champion winner the following year. Boomer also won the Grand American Bench Show overall and came back the next year to place 4th in the Grand American Nite Hunt.
Other famous winners that Lee Currens has owned and shown are GRCH Voight’s Smooth Lady, GRCH Kentucky River Candy, and the current Purina Outstanding Show Dog of the Year GRCH KY River Little Bit Fancy.
Lee has always been a dedicated coon hunter believing that you can hunt and show the same hound. His Kentucky River Rock was the sire of the famous sire Buck Creek Drum. His Kentucky River Rowdy was a half-brother to Drum.
Youth handlers and adults alike are in for a real treat as Lee presents a seminar chock full of information including training, conditioning and handling at the AKC Youth World Championship in Newport, Tennessee. Once again, the date is Saturday, July 3rd. The seminar starts at 3 PM.
