Eufaula, AL – The AKC Black Gold – Gold Medal Championship began on January 1st of 2009 and concluded tonight with the final four hunting out of the Malcolm McNabb Reeves Community Center in Eufaula. The two-hour contest pitted four male Treeing Walker coonhounds with nearly ten thousand dollars in prize money and a prestigious title up for grabs. Two raccoons were scored and two hounds finished within 25 points of each other, both posting similar performances.
The hunt began with Wipeout Hellbilly, co-owned and handled by Barry Kiddy of Adamsville, Tenn., getting a first strike and first tree with the coon seen by judges Eddy Parker of Newville, AL and Micky Gilmore of Clayton, AL. Hot Shot, owned by W.W. Moore and handled by Larry Parnell, both of Whatley, AL answered with 75 strike points and 125 tree points to move within 25 of Kiddy.
Coon hunts at this time of year usually separate the big dogs from the pups. No coon was seen on Hellbilly’s second effort and he drew 150 minus. Hot Shot moved to the lead but it was short-lived. He also drew 150 minus on an identical situation to surrender the lead back to Kiddy. Ndugu, handled by Tim Sellers of Clayton, AL took 125 minus and would finish with that score. Valley Creek Power Pack was struck early in the contest for 50 points but blew out of pocket and was not heard from for the remainder of the hunt.
When the smoke cleared, it was CGN Wipeout Hellbilly winning the AKC Black Gold – Gold Medal Championship. Hellbilly is co-owned by Sumner Cullom of Wilson, Arkansas. The win netted the owners a check for five thouusand dollars, a Garmin Astro 220 GPS-enabled tracking system, a year’s supply of Black Gold Premium Dog Food, and a specially embroidered “Champion” jacket from Black Gold as well.
The Reserve Champion was Hot Shot. He earned a check in the amount of $2000.00, a year’s supply of Black Gold Premium Dog Food and a Reserve Champion jacket from Black Gold.
Sellars and Sun’s Wipeout Ndugu (the “d” is silent) earned $1,700.00 and a year’s supply of Black Gold Premium Dog Food. Ricklefs and Valley Creek Power Pack earned $1000.00 and a year’s supply of Black Gold as well.
The Barbour County Coon Hunters Association, and especially Micky Gilmore, Tim Sellars, Sean Rasberry, Danny Gibson, Danny Wiggins, Ashley Rasberry, and Kristin McClure are to be congratulated on holding an outstanding event once again. Thank you from the AKC Coonhound Events Management Team for your tireless dedication to this event.
