TO BECOME AN AKC BENCH SHOW JUDGE OR AKC HUNT DIRECTOR

Existing AKC Judges

Previously approved AKC Judges will remain approved and expiration dates will no longer be used. New cards will be mailed in the upcoming weeks to all existing judges listing their judging number. The same looking card will be given to all judges regardless of Bench Show Judge or Hunt Director.

Experienced Judges Wanting to Become Approved

Judges who have experience as a Bench Show Judge, Master of Hounds, or Hunt Director in UKC or PKC events can apply to be grandfathered in as an AKC Bench Show Judge and/or AKC Hunt Director by mailing us a completed Grandfather Candidate Form Candidates are required to understand and abide by AKC Coonhound Regulations. Bench Show Judges can refer to the breed standards below.

Application Process for New Hunt Directors or Bench Show Judges Without Prior Experience:

  • Contact Coonhound Events Dept. for an application at 919-816-3909.
  • You will be sent an application, a written test, and regulation book.
  • You will be required to provide 2 instances of having apprenticed, list 2 fellow club members who are sponsoring you, and provide info on your involvement in the sport.
  • Complete the application and return it to AKC for review. You will be sent a letter informing you of the outcome and upon approval, will be mailed a judge’s card.
