Parsons, TN - The 35th Annual Decatur County World's Largest Coon Hunt Benefit for St Jude Children's Research Hospital is officially underway. Hunt Director Nelda Pritchard of Parsons officially opened the event on Thursday afternoon after remarks by Decatur County Volunteer's President Janis Boyd, St Jude's Scott Hinshelwood, AKC's Jimmy Phillips and Steve Fielder. George Haggard served as Master of Ceremonies for the opening.
The event kicked off with a free white bean and cornbread supper that is well-attended by Parson-area folks in addition to those that come to the St Jude to enjoy the coonhound events. An AKC-licensed Youth Hunt that drew 38 entries comprised of 29 youths in the 13 and over bracket and 9 competing in the 12 and under age group was also held on opening night. Thursday night at the St Jude Hunt also features a adies hunt which drew seven entries this year.
Activities on Friday will include a non-licensed water race, non-licensed treeing contest and an AKC World Qualifying Nite Hunt. Saturday will feature those events in addition to an AKC-licensed coonhound bench show on Saturday morning.
The Decatur County Volunteers have raised $3,624,000.00 for the St Jude Children's Research Hospital since the event's initial event in 1976. That's an incredible average of more than $100,000 each year!
The American Kennel Club is especially proud and pleased to be associated with this outstanding event.
