Decatur, TN - The youth handlers of the 2008 AKC Youth World Championship came to Meigs County, Tennessee from across the nation and left a lot more than footprints along its creeks and across its ridges. This crop of young hunters proved that the future of our sport is in good hands, very good hands indeed.
Reports from the judges over the two-night competition reported excellent sportsmanship and ability in this class of youth handlers. I witnessed this first hand in the headquarters building and around the barns all weekend and it did a body good to see the quality shine through in this group of young people.
Taking top honors by putting two cast wins with plus points together and the highest combined score in the older age group was Cody Goss of Carrollton, Mississippi handling a three-year old Treeing Walker male owned by Jay Tidwell of Vicksburg, Miss., named for the famed Ole Miss running back Benjarvis Green-Ellis.
Taking Reserve honors by virtue of being the high-scoring dog in the twelve and under bracket was eight-year old Brendon Davis of Decatur, Tennessee. Brendon handled Davis’ Fargo, an eight-year old Plott male owned by his dad, Dustin Davis.
We congratulate these Youth World Champions and will post the complete winners on Sunday. A huge thanks to the Meigs County Coonhunters and to the amazing sponsors of the 2008 AKC World Youth Championship. It was a tremendous event attended by some truly amazing kids.
