Raleigh, NC - On my drive in to work this morning, I noticed that the Forsythia bushes are in bloom. When I lived in Michigan that was my cue to fertilize the lawn, especially with a pre-emergence crab grass killer. I knew that spring was on the way, but of course up there in the land of the big lakes, it was a lot later coming on.
Springtime signals the advent of some serious competition hunting across the nation's mid-section. I'll kick off my personal spring fling with the American Plott Association's annual Breed Days in Hickory Grove, SC on March 15 and 16. We'll be having an AKC World Qualifying Nite Hunt and a Black Gold Bench Show Spectacular show with 10 bonus points up for grabs on Saturday this year. I hope to see many of you there. http://www.akccoonhounds.org/asp/modules/events/showme2.asp?state=SC&category=All%20Events&useryear=2008&usermonth=3&showeventtype=AllEvents&youth=
Then on March 28 and 29, Jerry Moll and I will be heading up to Huron County, Ohio for the first AKC X-treme Spring Championship, featuring $2000.00 in added purses each night and $500 added on the bench show on Saturday! This is a terrific opportunity for you boys and girls in the Midwest to break out of the winter doldrums and come on out to hunt for some serious cash. Cast wins with plus will qualify your hound for the 2009 AKC World Hunt and theres Black Gold Bench Show Spectacular bonus points up for grabs for those of you who love to show. Dewayne Brough, noted bench show judge from Oak Harbor, Ohio will be judging the show. This is one event that I am certainly looking forward to. http://forum.akccoonhounds.org/viewtopic.php?p=19422#19422
March is a very bus month in the AKC Coonhound Events Department with four state championships and fourteen Black Gold Gold Medal events, all of which offer a one-shot opportunity to qualify for the World Championship. We licensed a total of 145 events for March, ninety-nine of which are Nite Hunts so there should be lots of opportunities to hunt in the New AKC out your way.
If your club is still one of those that isnt offering the fun, fair, and feasible AKC format of Nite Hunt, Bench Show, Water Race and Field Trial events, give us a call. It's toll free and the number is 1-888-436-4486. The license fee is still a low $25 and includes a license for all four types of events. With spring coming you may want to clean out that water race pond or bush hog some trails for a field trial, all of which can bring revenue to your club on the upcoming warm and sunny days of spring.
