Coon hunting in the wake of Ike
9/15/2008 8:24:32 AM
Journal entry for Monday, September 15, 2008
GOOD MONDAY MORNING!
Our great country felt the power of Mother Nature over the weekend as the big storm Ike came marching into Texas and up the midsection doing what those kinds of storms are wont to do – pretty much tearing things up and challenging our mettle.
Field Rep Jerry Moll who lives in southeastern Indiana reported in via email this morning that his power is out and that he lost several trees and had damage to his barn. A look at the coonhound message boards over the weekend show the evidence of a lot of wind and rain for those that ventured out to the events. One hundred and thirty five licensed night hunts were held on Friday and Saturday, including the AKC New York State Championship and of course, the zone hunts of the UKC World Championship. I always hate to see weather affect the events but it seems they all came through okay and my congratulations go out to the winners.
SUPREME BREEDERS CLUB GETTING ATTENTION NATIONWIDE
We’re head over heels in our new Supreme Breeders Club program here and it’s been amazing to hear the positive response. We wanted to build a program that was affordable and one that would hinge upon our “beat the dogs you draw, that’s all” philosophy and from what I’m hearing, the message is getting through. To date we’ve personally talked to nearly 1000 coon hunters about the SBC program.
One of the questions I’m asked is “how much will a title be worth?” Of course there’s no way to guess that at this point since the fund is made up of litter enrollments, pup enrollments, and sire enrollments plus sponsorship each year. I hope it’s worth a thousand bucks but we won’t know that until we have the 2009 year behind us.
Right now is the time to take advantage of the retroactive offer to enroll your sire’s 2007, 2008, and 2009 litters for a flat fee of $100.00. There are some things in life we just naturally postpone including sending a check to the IRS on April 15th but this is one deadline, December 31, 2008, that you don’t want to miss if you have a stud dog. Also, you breeders with litters born in 2007 should know that they can be enrolled until December 31, 2008 for just $50.00. We will be happy to send you the necessary forms or you can download them form this website by clicking on this link: http://www.akccoonhounds.org/asp/sboard/display.asp?Action=view&subid=1501&board=news
BIG ADDED PURSE EVENT - THE $5000 ADDED AKC FALL CLASSIC
Speaking of deadlines, coon hunters in the southeast and across the nation need to make note of the advance entry deadline of September 27th for the AKC Fall Classic, hosted by the Southeastern Treeing Walker Association at the Rowan County Fairgrounds in Salisbury, NC. Where in this day and time can you hunt for $5000.00 added on a $30 entry fee? Amazing! Here’s the link for the entry form and details of the hunt and show:

Don’t be setting there with your nose in the middle of your face after the deadline saying, “I wish I had entered.” Do it now!
HUNTING WITH THE DC 30 COLLAR FROM GARMIN
I've hunted 5 nights with the DC 30 and can't find a glitch in it. On Saturday night we turned two Walker dogs loose that hadn't been out of the pen since last February. They hit a "fast" track right out of the truck. They ran the track around and around a beaver pond that's about as thick and rough as you can get around here. They never did blow out of the country. I’m not sure if we were running off game or a coon that just gave ‘em the slip but they sure were busy in there. The track on the screen of the Garmin receiver looked like a bowl of spaghetti!
When they finally had had enough of that, the unit revealed they had run a total of 6.4 miles on that track and never did blow out of hearing. I'm pretty sure it was a fox. There's just no comparing the information these units provide. You know exactly how far away the dog is at all times, measuring the distance in yards first and then when it gets out to 1000 yards, it converts to miles. It adds a whole new dimension to the sport for sure.
The collars are configured just like standard tracking collars we’re used to. The paint is wearing off this unit telling me it's getting plenty of punishment out there but it appears to be as tough as any other tracking collar I've used. The convenience is a big plus, having my personal GPS and my tracker both in the palm of my hand.
I haven't done any range testing with it but with the ability to track to the point where the dog was when the signal was lost, it's inconceivable to think the dog would get away from me.
I don't have the topo maps installed in this unit but plan to get the chip right away so I can better monitor the terrain, creeks, roads, etc. So far, I really like the unit.
